Wind and Rain? Not a problem for the Amgen team who recently joined Creating Canopies for a corporate volunteering planting day at Mona Park in the Cumberland City Council area.

Thursday 26th October saw brisk winds and showers greeting the seven Amgen volunteers who arrived on site with the promise to plant 400 trees and shrubs along the bank of Duck River in Auburn.

Amgen had carefully chosen Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies as their volunteer initiative for 2023, wanting to be part of a hands-on project that was making a difference towards a greener tomorrow.

That goal was met as volunteers used mattocks and trowels to hand plant native species into a patch of mulched earth.

Invasives such as Balloon Vine (Cardiospermum grandiflorum), Maderia Vine (Anredera) and Cockspur Coral Tree (Erythrina crista-galli) had been cleared by Cumberland Council staff to make way for the Amgen and Creating Canopies planting crews.

Planting the Riparian Zone

Planting native vegetation along even the smallest urban streams and rivers can have huge impacts on water quality and stream health.

Vegetated shorelines help prevent pollution and contaminants from entering directly into the water course by slowing runoff and encouraging filtration, as well as preventing soil erosion.

Native vegetation is especially important along watercourses, as the roots of our native trees, shrubs, and grasses extend much deeper into the soil that invasive or ornamental species.

Vegetation creates a living buffer against all the nasties that can enter our watercourses and cause environmental impacts such as wildlife death, algae blooms, and water quality deterioration.

The humble Duck River eventually drains into the Parramatta River, which is the main tributary of the Sydney Harbour, reiterating the important connection water holds throughout all New South Wales.
