Greater Sydney Young Landcare Leaders…
GSLN has been successful in securing a 2017 Community Landcare Grant! The grant will allow us to extend the Greater Sydney Young Landcare leaders project to at least 2 new regions in Greater Sydney. We will be running Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreats and Intrepid Way Youth Engagement Workshops in these areas in partnership with Intrepid Landcare and local collaborators.
We’re holding the next retreat in South West Sydney and are currently seeking expressions of interest from,
- Young people in South West Sydney aged 16 to 35 who are keen to make a difference when it comes to local environmental issues and fun doing it,
- People experienced in Landcare, NRM, or other environmental initiatives who are interested in mentoring young people local to the South West Sydney region.
As always, we love to hear from people from across Greater Sydney who are interested in the project and would like to bring it to their area.

Update on Western Sydney Retreat/ Young Lancarers crew
GSLN ran a pilot Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreat in Western Sydney over the weekend of March 25th and 26th, 2017. Since then the young people who have attended have formed 2 local groups tackling environmental issues, Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare and Hawkesbury Environmental Action Group.
Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare
The Intrepid Westies have been busy taking care of endangered ecological communities on the Cumberland Plain since March as volunteers with the Cumberland Plain Support Program. They met Xuela Sledge, who manages the CPSP, at the retreat, where she volunteered to be a mentor.
Keep an eye on their Facebook page! They have some exciting things planned for the next few months.
Hawkesbury Environmental Action Group
A group of the Hawkesbury-based retreat attendees have recently formed the Hawkesbury Environmental Action Group. They aim to raise awareness about environmental issues in their region, starting with an expo educating locals about koalas in the Hawkesbury in January, 2018.
Young Sustainability Ambasadoor
GSLN Landcare Coordinator Elisha Duxbury made her first visit to Hawkesbury High School as a Young Sustainability Ambassador earlier this month. During the visit she and fellow YSA Carl Williams and Landcare Legend Angela Cook, presented their sustainability stories and guided a group of students through the initial stages of designing a Kreative Koalas project.
The Young Sustainability Ambassador program aims to empower a generation of young professionals and change-makers working in the sustainability sector, and long-term community leaders – Landcare Legends, working in Landcare and sustainability to craft and deliver powerful stories for change to inspire a younger generation, and develop tools for personal impact on global issues in sustainability. Elisha was accepted in as a YSA in April and underwent 3 intensive workshops prior to her school visit, which provided upskilling in communication and public speaking.
The Kreative Koalas program aims to inspire and encourage a younger generation to investigate global and local sustainability issues and reflect on ways of creating change for a sustainable future through art and multimedia. The program allows for conservation and sustainability conversations to be communicated to far-reaching audiences of youth through;
- school creative arts project
- a hands on community sustainability project for impact
Both these elements are part of a multiple school regional community exploration of sustainability issues.
The Kreative Koalas program matches Young Sustainability Ambassadors, enthusiastic young people passionate about sustainability to each school. The Young Sustainability Ambassadors and Landcare Legends assist the students to follow the journey to sustainable living and creating the change they want to see.
The Kreative Koalas and YSA programs will wrap up with an exhibition of the schools’ projects on November 2, 2017.
