On Tuesday 15th October 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted Mapletree for a corporate volunteering day. The task? To plant over 600 native trees and shrubs for the Creating Canopies project to reduce urban heat in Greater Sydney.

21 staff from Mapletree didn’t let the rain stop them – they donned rain ponchos and megawatt smiles to get the job done.

The team installed native plants including gum trees (eucalypts), paperbarks (melaleucas), wattles (acacias), she-oaks (allocasuarina), and Sweet Bursaria (Bursaria spinosa) which are all suited to this area.

The location for the day was Dirrabari Reserve in Pemulwuy in the Cumberland Local Government Area, where Creating Canopies planted in May 2025.

The Mapletree volunteers also assembled and installed guards to protect the plants as they get established and deter browsing wildlife.

This was the second time Mapletree had joined Greater Sydney Landcare for a corporate volunteering day – the first was in October 2023 when 23 Mapletree staff joined us to install 750 native plants in Macquarie Park.

Greater Sydney Landcare staff Bryce Doyle – Natural Resources Manager, Alicia Harb-Akins – Creating Canopies Project Officer, and Eli Stead – Southwest Sydney Koala Project Officer led the day.

Greater Sydney Landcare staff praised the Mapletree team for their fantastic efforts and determination. Thank you Mapletree! We can’t wait to plant with you again and would have you back anytime.

A huge thank you also to Cumberland City Council for volunteering Dirrabari Reserve for increased canopy cover.

Together we’re making Sydney a cooler, greener place.
