Happy National Volunteer Week!

One of our big projects that wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers, is Creating Canopies.

Our aim is to help cool our communities by planting 100,000 trees across Greater Sydney. Tree canopies also create habitat for wildlife, increase biodiversity, and invite people back into nature.

We celebrate you, our wonderful volunteers who lend your time, energy, laughter and a little elbow grease to get these plants in the ground.

A horse of gorse. We just had another cracker week

A horse of gorse. We just had another cracker weekend away with an awesome crew down in the Southern Highlands!

On Saturday we smashed a lot of gorse, another horrible weed, under close supervision of the local horses and were treated to some delicious food @suttonforestinn. On Sunday we had a fantastic breakfast @theveggienook and explored Mt Gibraltar with Geoff Allen from the local Landcare Bushcare group and learnt about the local environment.

A real thorn in the side!

Gleditsia is a really nasty and invasive weed and we treated over 100 of them in the Capertee Valley on Saturday with Central Tablelands Local Land Services and Capertee Valley Landcare.

It was a super team and a super effort! It's so important to remove weeds like Gleditsia to prevent it from spreading into the Wollemi Wilderness area and also to restore habitat for the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater. There's only a few hundred of them left.

After all our hard work, we went up the road and had some delicious treats at From the Paddock Farm Market

Join us for a post lockdown adventure into a remote area of the Blue Mountains. It'll be a fantastic weekend of learning about the bush, getting our hands dirty removing weeds to help protect it and exploring the world heritage area that's home to several species of critically endangered birds, all in the incredible setting of the Capertee Valley, the second biggest canyon in the world!

So if you've always been keen to make a difference but weren't sure where to start, or just want a weekend in the bush with some like-minded people for a great adventure, now's your chance to get involved!

What do the southern myotis bat, the striped marsh frog, the banded godwit and the eastern longneck turtle all have in common? Well they're all very special and they live on the banks of the Parramatta River. Join Jasmine Payget from the Parramatta Riverkeeper Network for an inspiring talk tomorrow at 6pm about the history of the river, the plans to clean it up and make it swimmable for us too. She'll be talking about the important and inspiring work that the Parramatta Riverkeeper Network is doing to connect and empower local people and organisations to regenerate and protect the local environment.

Penrith City Council for the win! As part of our C

Penrith City Council for the win! As part of our Creating Canopies project, they planted 350 trees along School House Creek a few weeks ago which will help to restore the banks and bushland of the creek, improve water quality and create habitat for animals. An awesome effort, big thanks for your work!

We're pretty excited about this Thursday night! Incredible ecologist Tom Covell will be taking us on an online nature discovery. He'll be talking to us about all the awesome critters that live in urban and peri-urban bushland in Sydney, stuff like microbats, gliders, lizards and frogs and so much more. Tom has so much knowledge and passion and is one of the best speakers around, he'll really get you hooked!

Check out this incredible little treasure! The Purple Copper Butterfly is one of Australia's rarest and most beautiful butterflies. It exists under very specific conditions and lives only in the Central Tablelands region of NSW. It depends on a specific species of ant and a specific species of bush to survive!

Who's hanging out in your backyard? This incredible photo was taken by our Project Coordinator, Matt Keighery. The little powerful owl fledging was born metres away from his house.

Sadly, we're losing 13 to 15% of the powerful owl population in Sydney every year. There are very strong suspicions that rodenticide contributes to this.

So please use owl-friendly methods of dealing with rodents proposed by Birdlife Australia, you can check their website for more info

Lock down sure has slowed life down a bit. Maybe not as slow as this guy though. It's the humble Cumberland Plain Land Snail.

They're actually endangered and they live in the Cumberland Plain Woodland which is the bushland in Western Sydney. This bushland is critically endangered with only about 5% remaining!

We've been working really hard to help restore and protect the Cumberland Plain. Check out the video from last night's webinar by our amazing Local Landcare Coordinator, Xuela Sledge to learn more
