On Thursday 31st October 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted a corporate volunteering day for 21 employees from Westpac. The location was Marrickville Golf, Sporting & Community Club in the Inner West LGA.
Greater Sydney Landcareβs Matt Keighery led the day with three members of The Mudcrabsβa local community group of eco-volunteers that work on environmental conservation efforts along the Cooks River.
Matt greatly appreciated the Westpac teamβs efforts and said: βItβs incredible what we achieved.β
βFirstly, we demolished a shed and removed 750 kg of debris including old roller doors, astro turf and the termite-ridden shed itself.β
βThis will allow for native plant regeneration in the future and already enables new sightlines to the Cooks River and improved amenity for the Community.β
βSecondly, we planted 250 native trees and shrubs across two sites on approximately 300 square metres of land.β

βAnd last but not least, we removed approximately 20 square metres of exotic vegetation (weeds) including Lantana, Cestrum and Bidens that was competing with native plants previously planted by Greater Sydney Landcare.β
Matt said the Westpac group were fantastic and a pleasure to work with.
Thank you to Westpac, the Mudcrabs, and Marrickville Golf Club for working together with Greater Sydney Landcare to achieve these fantastic environmental outcomes.
This work was part of a larger long-term effort by Greater Sydney Landcare and partners to realise a landscape-scale restoration project.
It aims to increase amenity, habitat and aesthetics through control of exotic vegetation and removal of rubbish on an incredibly important Inner West green space alongside the Cooks River. This work is supported by Landcare Australia, Hawkeβs Brewing, and Greater Sydney Landcareβs Creating Canopies project amongst others.
The aim of the Marrickville Golf Club President, Andrew Tighe, is to make Marrickville Golf Club a botanic garden of native plants within which people can play golf.
