Young Leaders Launch Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare Group

By 13/06/2017June 19th, 2017No Comments

Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare has just been launched on Facebook.  The group formed after attending a Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreat piloted by GSLN in collaboration with Intrepid Landcare at Brewongle Environmental Education Centre in Sackville North on the weekend of March 25 and 26.

At the retreat, the group were introduced to mentors from the Hawkesbury/ Western Sydney community including Steven Body (Principal, Brewongle EEC),  Mark Fuller (Cumberland Land Conservancy), Tegan Burton (National Parks and Wildlife Lane Cove), and Xuela Sledge (Greater Sydney Landcare Network).

On Saturday, after a welcome session with some ‘get to know you’ activities the young people spent the sampling Landcare activities. They enjoyed a smoking ceremony and talk on cultural knowledge by Chris Tobin, tree planting with Angus Reynolds from Blue Tongue Bush Regeneration, and kayaking, including rubbish removal, on the Hawkesbury River.

The participants took part in leadership and project planning workshops on Sunday with their mentors. Since the retreat, they have been planning a litter removal event to clean up Western Sydney’s waterways.

Western Sydney Intrepid Landcare describe themselves as a group of volunteers who are enthusiastic and passionate about the environment. They aim to couple volunteering with fun and adventure, and always welcome new people to come along.
