On National Tree Day, Sunday 28 July 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team hosted a planting in partnership with Western Sydney Parklands. 40 volunteers joined us to plant 1,000 native trees and shrubs at Lizard Log in Abbotsbury.

The species planted were selected for their suitability to the area, and all belong to the Cumberland Plain Woodland ecological communityβ€”of which less than 6% remains. This planting will help bolster this critically endangered ecological community.

The volunteers, many of them children, didn’t let the wind dampen their spirits. The sun shone down on their positive efforts to improve this environment as they planted Eucalypts (gum trees), Acacias (wattles), Dodonea viscosa subsp. cuneata (a hop bush), Ozothamnus diosmifolius (rice flower), and Indigofera australis (Australian Indigo).

Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies Project Manager Danielle Packer and Natural Resources Manager Bryce Doyle led the day. They were also supported by bush regenerators from Dragonfly to ensure that all the volunteers were planting effectively.

This planting extended on a previous Creating Canopies planting which was installed in April 2024. Greater Sydney Landcare partnered with Western Sydney Parklands to host a planting for the Girl Guides NSW, ACT & NT as part of their annual β€˜Lark in the Park’ event. The Girl Guides installed 1,000 plants as well.

Thanks to this National Tree Day planting, a total of 2,000 native trees and shrubs have been added to Lizard Log by Creating Canopies & Western Sydney Parklands in 2024.

After the morning’s efforts, the volunteers enjoyed a catered lunch of Subway sandwiches, wraps and cookies to replenish their energy levels.

The group then dove into the work of guarding the freshly installed plants with heavy duty wallaby guards. Kangaroos live in the area and are known to browse the park’s plants for a nibble.

We were pleased to be joined at this planting by members of the Get Up Kids! This group has planted annually with Creating Canopies over the years. Thank you to all who participated and planted with us for National Tree Day – we are so grateful for your help.

Thank you also to Western Sydney Parklands and Greater Sydney Parklands for volunteering this site for trees and working with us to ensure a cooler, greener Sydney in the future.
