On Thursday 23rd May 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare met with interested residents from the Buxton, Tahmoor, Thirlmere and Picton areas to discuss starting a new group, Buxton Landcare. The group is working to create a wildlife-friendly town, restore habitat, and enable and encourage natural regeneration to create a healthier and more resilient environment and catchment.

About 10 people gathered at the Tahmoor Inn Hotel Motel to chat with Greater Sydney Landcare’s Xuela Sledge and Local Landcare Coordinator for the Macarthur region Vanessa Gimellaro.

Discussions were fruitful as the group was keen to have community engagement at its core.

Priorities for the new Buxton Area Landcare group will include:

  • Running education on replacing garden weed varieties with native species instead.
  • Weed and native species identification workshops.
  • Competitions to encourage environmental outcomes.
  • Community land revitalisation and regeneration works.

Restoring Catchment & Community Resilience in the Wollondilly

Buxton Landcare was formed by Greater Sydney Landcare in collaboration with local landholders as part of a new catchment restoration project supported through a partnership between the Great Eastern Ranges and Amazon Web Services.

The two-year project aims to restore catchment land in key locations in the Wollondilly Shire to improve water yield and quality, boost biodiversity and enhance the resilience of local communities to the impacts of climate change.

As part of the project, Greater Sydney Landcare is engaging local landholders, community groups and local government to improve, expand and reconnect habitats for local wildlife and manage key threats that suppress natural regeneration and reduce water quality and output.
