On Friday 13th October, corporate volunteers from Ampol joined Greater Sydney Landcare’s Matt Keighery at Marrickville Golf Club.

Bush Regeneration on the Golf Course

The Ampol team took part in bush regeneration works in bushland on the course. Thanks to their hard work, 60 kg of weeds were removed from an area of around 600 square metres.

Ampol also removed a huge 200 kg of rubbish in the riparian zone next to the Cooks River, including old golf buggies, lots of pipes, seats, bricks, iron objects and a trailer!

Thank you to the corporate volunteers from Ampol who weeded and removed rubbish from Marrickville Golf Club with Greater Sydney Landcare in October 2023.

Situated alongside the Cooks River, these works compliment the efforts of Inner West Council Bush regenerators and eco volunteer community group the Mudcrabs in turning the golf course precinct into a place not just for golfers, but a more scenic, peaceful place for the community while advancing ecological values for its diverse wildlife.

“It was a pretty cool day’s work and much appreciated by the Club and the Ampol attendees. They really enjoyed it,” Matt said.

A Vision for an Environmentally Friendly Golf Course

Matt said that the golf club’s President – Andrew Tighe’s aim is to make Marrickville Golf Course a botanic garden of native plants within which people can play golf.

This will take sustained effort and Greater Sydney Landcare is happy to help.

A great day was had by all and, thanks to Ampol’s hard work, the area was ready to be replanted with native trees and shrubs.

In places, the golf course has been neglected with areas used for leaving old buggies, trailers and other detritus. Greater Sydney Landcare and volunteers have been cleaning up this rubbish as well as removing infestations of exotic weeds across repeated visits.

The work the Ampol team did—removing rubbish, spreading mulch, and laying logs—turned the area into a healthier habitat for native wildlife and prepped the site for future planting.

The area was later planted by Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team and another corporate volunteering group from ING on Wednesday 25th October. Click the link to read about that day.

Thank you to Marrickville Golf Club for volunteering your site for bush regeneration, and thank you to the staff members of Ampol for all your hard work.
