On Friday 15th March 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare hosted a corporate volunteering day for over 40 Kimberly-Clark staff members. Greater Sydney Landcare’s Matt Keighery led the team in bush regeneration activities along the Lane Cove River in Chatswood West.

Matt was joined by Greater Sydney Landcare’s Natural Resource Officer Bryce Doyle, Project Officer Sophie Blair, and new Bush Regenerator Supervisor Aimee Hancock in facilitating the ecological restoration work.

This day was part of Kimberly-Clark’s Corporate Purpose Day. Their purpose is ‘Better Care. Better World’ and they chose to focus on two areas – community and the environment. Greater Sydney Landcare hosted two corporate volunteering events for Kimberly-Clark – this one and another to plant native trees and shrubs to establish a canopy and reduce urban heat at The Ponds in the Blacktown Local Government Area.

Restoring Bushland, Respecting Country

Matt said of the day, “Sometimes when you are working with volunteers in bushland, it is difficult to get the momentum going. Over 40 Kimberly-Clark volunteers, however, came to Cammeraygal and Wallumedegal lands along the Lane Cove River in West Chatswood determined to work and make an impression, as well as understand the rich history and ecology of the area.”

“So, after an intro discussion where we talked about Aboriginal custodianship of country and the still significant sites of their life along the river, we began the task to reduce some very large areas of Lantana and other weeds. This will make space once again for the fauna and flora of the area to thrive.”

“As well, we made time for people to explore some of the foreshore and surrounds, which still houses much of the way that the local clans lived. We got plenty done. Chris Williams, from Willoughby City Council’s Bushland Regeneration Team, viewed the area afterwards and was very pleased with the work undertaken. A man of few words, ‘good gains’ were the words he used to describe it. Chris knows that our efforts in bushland restoration are about increments, they are about people making a difference.”

“For Kimberly-Clark their Corporate Day was themed ‘Community and Environment’ and it was a terrific effort that left us Greater Sydney Landcare people very appreciative, and the environment that much better. Thank you Kimberly-Clark!”
