Find out how Creating Canopies 2023 National Tree Day planting at Gough Park in Cecil Hills is growing.
UPDATE: Gough Park – Creating Canopies National Tree Day 2023
On Saturday 29thΒ July 2023, over 50 volunteers joined Creating Canopies to celebrate National Tree Day by planting 3,000 trees and shrubs at Gough Park in Cecil Hills, in the Liverpool LGA.
It was great to be joined by the We Are One volunteering group, the Sai Organisation, Liverpool City Councillor Charishma Kaliyanda, and two fire trucks worth of firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service on the day who helped water in the plants.
Greater Sydney Landcare’s Natural Resources Manager Esteban Zepeda visited the site in December 2023 and noted an 87% survival rate for the planting.
Esteban said, β[the] plantings are doing well with only minor death in isolated areas especially one particular species, Casuarine glauca.”
Esteban saw the weed Chilean needle grass very close to plantings. He noted, “This species needs to be monitored and removed by Council to ensure it does not overtake plantings.”
During the visit, Esteban removed grasses from around the plants, then spot sprayed. He also used the scrape and paint method to control Blackberry weeds within our site.
