On Thursday 12th October 2023, 23 corporate volunteers from Mapletree joined the Creating Canopies team at a private property on Lane Cove Road in Macquarie Park to plant 750 native trees and shrubs.
In time these plants will grow to provide shade and cooling through evapotranspiration, as well as food and shelter for wildlife. Amongst the species planted were 15 Eucalyptus pilularis or Blackbutt, which can grow to a height of 70 metres in ideal conditions—which is about the wingspan of a 747 airplane. In this location they might grow up to 30-35 metres tall.
Esteban Zepeda, Natural Resources Manager for Creating Canopies, led the day.
“Thank you to the Mapletree crew for their great enthusiasm and team work, planting 750 plants at Macquarie Park,” said Mr Zepeda.
“It was a very warm day but the team powered through eagerly. Their work will help to regenerate a much-needed vegetation corridor running parallel to the M2 Motorway.”
“The diverse range of species planted will provide a great mix of habitat and food sources for a multitude of birds, insects and reptiles who will soon be able to enjoy this previously underutilised strip of land,” Mr Zepeda said.
Mapletree team members had this to say about the day: “Very hands on and met participant expectations exactly.” They rated day as ‘excellent’ and thought that the length of the day was not too long or too short, but ‘just right’. They were keen to get updates about the growth of the trees over time.
This was the first Creating Canopies (stage 2) planting in the Ryde Local Government Area in 2023.
