On Wednesday 8th of May 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team planted at Poulton Park in South Hurstville, in the Georges River Council local government area.

Natural Resources Manager Bryce Doyle, Bush Regenerator Supervisor Aimee Hancock and Bush Regenerator Rhiannon Beaton planted 600 native trees and shrubs on the day.

This site included a number of potential hazards—including a water body, a sleep slope, rocky conditions, and long grass —and so was planted by the Creating Canopies team instead of with community or corporate volunteers.

Georges River Council prepared the site for planting, and is also undertaking the post-planting watering and maintenance.

Thank you to the Georges River Council for volunteering this site for canopy trees and shrubs.

Creating Canopies hosted a planting with community volunteers in the Georges River Council Local Government Area in April 2024.

Plants were sourced from the Sutherland Shire Community Nursery and Toolijooa Nursery for this planting.

The plants installed included 60 gum trees and 40 small trees like Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus) and NSW Christmas Bush (Ceratopetalum gummiferum).

The Creating Canopies team also planted 500 shrubs, including Wattles (Acacias), Hop Bush (Dodonaea triquetra), Banksia, Tea-tree (Leptospermum trinervium), Rice Flower (Ozothamnus diosmifolius), Hakea and other native plants suited to this location.

Thank you to the Georges River Council for partnering with Creating Canopies today to increase canopy cover at Poulton Park, South Hurstville in the future.

All the plants installed will grow to 3 metres and above to create cooling shade in the future, to increase canopy cover and help reduce urban heat in Greater Sydney.

Thanks to work from the Georges River Council and Greater Sydney Landcare’s Creating Canopies team, this site is on its way to being rehabilitated from a weed affected area to a much healthier community of native plants.
