On Saturday 13 April, Greater Sydney Landcare was thrilled to partner with Georges River Council to host a Creating Canopies community planting – our first in this LGA this year.

Around 60 volunteers from all walks of life joined us on the day to plant 2,500 native trees and shrubs at Beale Park in Peakhurst.

Ms Danielle Packer, Creating Canopies Project Manager, led the day along with Creating Canopies Project Officer Laura Parent and Bush Regenerator Nicholas Brown.

Ms Packer said, “It was a lovely sunny day, and the volunteers planted the trees very well and very quickly! We were very impressed with their efforts.”

“Members of the Oatley Flora & Fauna Conservation Society—a local environmental community group—joined us on the day as well and were a great help in getting the trees in quickly and planted well,” said Ms Packer.

“Most of the trees planted here were flowering small trees and shrubs which our native bees and pollinators will love! We also planted large canopy trees to provide more shade for the residents who enjoy this park,” Ms Packer said.

The majority of the plants installed on this day were grown by the Menai Wildflower Group—a nursery run by volunteers in premises provided by Cleanaway.

Thank you to all who took part. Special shout out to the 22 members of the Oatley Flora & Fauna Conservation Society who came along to the event and planted with us. It was also great to see local Councillors Peter Mahoney and Christina Jamieson attend as well.

A big thank you to Georges River Council for volunteering this site for trees.
