Ventia and Transport for NSW have partnered with Greater Sydney Landcare and Landcare NSW’s Creating Canopies project.

The partnership resulted in the planting of 3,000 trees and shrubs on a site along Narellan Road, next door to the Australian Botanic Gardens, opposite Kenny Hill Road in Currans Hill.

On Tuesday 17th October, 27 corporate volunteers from Ventia and Transport for NSW joined the Creating Canopies team to plant 400 trees and shrubs.

This was just the start for this site, with a further 2,600 trees and shrubs planted by contractors the next day to bring the total number for this site to an amazing 3,000!

Matthew Wilson, Executive Director – Road Maintenance and Motorway Partnerships from Transport for NSW was on hand on the day to help plant.

The site was cleared of African Olive, a seriously invasive weed in this area, by Transport for NSW as a favour for the Australian Botanic Gardens as they were also clearing African Olive.

To restore the native bushland that was there prior to the invasive weed overtaking the area, Ventia reached out to Landcare to plant local native trees and shrubs.

It was a great outcome, all the trees were planted in the ground by the Ventia and Transport for NSW team, assisted by two staff members from Dirty planting and three Greater Sydney Landcare staff from the Creating Canopies team.

Ms Danielle Packer, Creating Canopies Project Manager said, “It is great to see Transport NSW doing their bit to improve natural areas where they can, not out of obligation, but because they see the value in restoring Australia’s native bushland.”

“Thank you also to Ventia for reaching out to Greater Sydney Landcare to encourage this partnership.”
