On Tuesday 16th April 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare was pleased to host a corporate volunteering day for KPMG, in partnership with Landcare Australia.

30 passionate KPMG volunteers gathered to plant along Optus Drive in Macquarie Park, in the Ryde Local Government Area – joining our Creating Canopies team for the day.

This was one of two events that Greater Sydney Landcare hosted for KPMG in partnership with Landcare Australia this month. The other was a bush regeneration day for 15 KPMG staff in Hunters Hill on Thursday 18th April.

Transforming the Landscape

Led by Creating Canopies Project Manager Danielle Packer and Project Officer Laura Parent, the KPMG team planted 600 native trees and shrubs including Eucalypts (gum trees), Allocasuarinas (she-oaks), Banksias, Acacias (wattles) and other native plants suited to this area.

The sunny day provided a lovely atmosphere as the group worked hard to transform the landscape. In the future it will provide a greener and more vibrant space for wildlife and the local community.

The trees and shrubs selected will grow to 3 metres and above, to provide shade and cooling via evapotranspiration, and help to reduce urban heat in the future.

Truly a Team Effort

As the KPMG team set to work, each volunteer was eager to contribute to the collective effort. Fertiliser was carefully put into each holes, the plants were planted into each pre-dug hole and then watered.

And in the midst of their labour, a welcome respite awaited as a delicious lunch spread was provided of freshly made sandwiches, delicious brownies and carrot cake.

Creating Habitat for Humanity & Wildlife

Each plant carefully selected was native to the region, chosen not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its ability to provide vital habitat for local wildlife and nourishment for pollinators.

Thank you to the City of Ryde for volunteering this site for trees, and to Landcare Australia and KPMG for their fantastic efforts to make this day happen.
