On Saturday 20th April 2024, Greater Sydney Landcare partnered with Penrith City Council to put on a Creating Canopies planting at Ellison Reserve in Werrington County.

48 volunteers joined us to plant 500 native trees and shrubs. The plants were supplied by the Council’s Nursery and together we planted Gum trees, Wattles, Kurrajongs and Hop Bush.

Volunteers learned about the importance of trees in the area. Many residents dropped by early in the morning to praise the initiative and express their appreciation. This planting will increase habitat for local wildlife and reduce temperatures during the hotter months once the trees mature.

The Penrith Council’s Bushcare team were excited to inform volunteers and visitors that the planting would increase the size of the bushland corridor. This may result in locals seeing more wildlife, like the emu that has been spotted in the area recently.

Georgina Kenyon, author of ‘Saving the Flying Fox: A Precious Forest Pollinator’, spoke to attendees about her new book and the importance of flying foxes, and generously gave copies of her book to attendees.

Volunteers came from near and far – not only from Penrith LGA suburbs but also from Hornsby, Parramatta, Turramurra and Richmond. Thank you to all who attended and planted with us!

Penrith Council’s Bushcare team members Jessica Whittick, Elise Richardson and Taryn Kennedy ran the day and Greater Sydney Landcare’s Bush Regenerator Aimee Hancock was on hand to help the event run smoothly.

Thank you to Penrith City Council for volunteering this site for trees and we look forward to planting in the Penrith LGA again soon as we have more events planned together!
